Mandrake

Mandrake
   A root often used in magic. The root resembles a person in that it appears to have a body with arms and legs. It is said that when the root is pulled from the ground it lets out a scream that either kills, or drives insane, the person who pulled the root out. Often a dog is used to pull the root out of the ground. The dog's owner ties one end of a cord to the root, and the other end to the dogs collar. When at a safe distance, the man calls the dog to him, which causes the root to be pulled from the ground as the dog goes to his master. If the root screams, the man is to far away to hear it, and thus safe. The effect on the dog is not reported.
